Easynews Upgrades 4/23/2009 BoromirWed, 23 Apr 2009 10:05:39 -0700
The first of our new fast storage is in production! As of our
maintenance window yesterday, we have a net increase of 80% more
IOPS and storage space on our fast storage system. This begins a
series of upgrades that allow us to improve Easynews performance
and availability.

You may have noticed AutoUnrar backlog is nearly completely up to
date. We've been able to do this because of the additional space we
now have to work with.

You may also have noticed thumbnailing is now backlogged - this is
just because of the massive amount of new files there are to thumbnail
(due to Autounrar).

Here's what our timeline currently looks like:

[Apr 24-May 1]
We should be about 25% complete with our upgrades.

[What we're doing]
-Using new storage to copy data off our 147 GB units onto 300 GB
units. This is the process of moving hundreds of terabytes
off disks so they can be decommissioned.
-Upgrading 147 GB units to 300 GB units as they become available.
-Shedding load from our deep storage.

[What you should be seeing now]
-Easynews "back to normal".
-Web indexes (old and new) will be up to date most/all of the time.
-Global Search results will be more current.
-Zip Manager should have much fewer slow/timeout issues. If you
have a reasonably sized zip archive (over 100 parts), you are
statistically likely to hit ALL of our file servers. So when
timeouts do occur, open an issue w/support and they can identify
what's going on.
-Autounrar backlog should become caught up to real time.

[May 2-8]
We should be about 50% complete by May 8.

[What we're doing]
-Continuing 147 to 300 GB disk upgrades.
-Using about 150% more IOPS and Storage of fast storage than we
originally had.

[What you should be seeing this week]
-Speedier Indexes, Thumbnails, Zip Manager and Global Search.

[May 9-15]
We should be about 75% complete by May 15.

[What we're doing]
-Rebalancing I/O
-Using all new fast storage - 392,760 total IOPS.
-Using all new deep storage.

[What you should be seeing this week]
-Good times.

[May 22]
We should be fully complete with our storage upgrades.

Thanks,
Boromir
